Fork Head Adjuster - Cheney Eng.

Fork Head Adjuster – Cheney Eng. … rake adjustors…top, bottom or both


These give you the ability to quickly change your rake.

  • Insert one adjustor in the top of your fork head: -can position this for a +0.50 or -0.50 degrees over 30″
  • Add an adjustor in the bottom of your fork head: -gives an adjustment of ~ +1 or -1 degree over the 30″

Each Adjustor comes with Adjusting Offset, Race and Bearing.

You need to supply the diameter, thickness and length of your fork head.

Your stem probably requires machining to fit the bearing. Or buy one of theirs and press it into your bottom yoke.

They also have some nice trick stuff to adjust your offset-

  • Offsets provide the ability to make incremental adjustments to move your forks closer or away from your fork steering stem. Offsetting forks farther from the steering stem transfers more of the engine weight to the rear wheel…provides better hook-up. By modifying your offsets, you can improve your rear wheel hook-up. The trick is getting the right amount of offset for each style of track.

…and for dealing with shorter inverted forks.

Time. Strange thing, Time.

For many it marches.

Tic. Toc. Tic. Toc. Tic…….

Clockwatchers. You all know one. Tic. Tic.

They always complain about time speeding up. Time flies.

I reckon time flies for them because they’ve done nothing worth remembering. There’s no record of that time memorable enough to remember. Their record of memorable events is short. Collected, Flicked through, Animated. All over in a blink. A flash in the pan.

Life in the fast lane.

Go out there. Wind in your face. Do it. Live the moments. Collect the memories.

2 things happen.

  • Time doesn’t concern you
  • Your collection becomes so big your perceived time slows.

Cats know this. You watch.

They always land on their feet. The only cat I’ve seen miss was out to lunch beforehand.

9 lives? I reckon not. They feel time differently. Closer to it they are.

It flows. Depending on your perception.  You all know this. Intuitively. You’ve even felt it. Moments of danger. Intense embarrassment. Connecting with that special person.

You can do this. Any time you want.

You are energy. So is time. Different flavours. Same Eis.

Same. Same. But different.

You’re connected. Like cats. Just not so close.

We learn to get closer in Kung-fu. Similarly Tai Ch’i and Yoga etc. Your connectedness feels disturbances at a finer level. Sub-consciously. And the responses are amplified.

Most people near the top in their field probably experience this too. Many unaware.

Motorcyclists rely on this. Daily.

Throttle response. Shifting. Body too. Balance. Split seconds.

Cat-time seconds.

The faster. The tighter. The riskier the riding. The closer to time you get.

Cat time.

XS650: Fork Brace   3 comments

I have a wife and kids. A home. Some toys. And my bikes. We live ok, are not well-off. Cash is always tight. Whatever I buy for my bikes is a compromise. That cash could, simply put, be used for other things.

So. Bang for my buck?

Good question.

I have an answer. It’s not a single item however.

There is a list. Needs prioritising according to your pocket and your bike.

If it’s not broken don’t fix it.

My basic list includes:

  • tapered roller steering head bearings…if needed
  • new fork oil, and seals when needed
  • swing arm roller bearings or bushes…always needed
  • rear shocks…anything is an improvement
  • check wheel bearings
  • look at the tyres
  • fork brace

Note that none of these are related to the motor. All affect handling. Directly.

I always keep my eye out for cheap fork braces. You hardly ever buy a bike with one on it.

Basic pattern is:

  • 35 x 55 x 185…’77-on
  • 35 x 55-58 x 185…’76
  • 34 x …………………….up to ’75 -i don’t have one here to measure

The later 35 x 55 x 185 version is shared with several other models. Some are:

  • SR500
  • XS750
  • XS1100
  • XJ550..80
  • XZ550S..82
  • XJ400..82
  • XZ400..82

’76 models are also found in ’80 Suzuki CM400L

The 35mm models produced that I know of are:

Any of these will strengthen up the front. Remove the fork flex. The results are immediately noticeable. Careful, it will uncover other problems.

XS650: Projects and Design   Leave a comment

We had a jam last Tuesday night. Industrial park workshop blues. These are good nights. Feeling pretty mellow I kicked into one of my favourite songs

I like these nights. They’re generally a mix of good music, bikes, mellowness, great company, lotsa bullshit, and I can walk the 200 or so metres along the river home.

One of the hottest topics is flow in design.

Look around at the completed or running projects in your neighbourhood. Check out the magazines etc. What do you like? What looks good? Do you think it rides well?

You wouldn’t have one of these bikes if you didn’t have at least a little eye for classic lines. The original bikes and their motors both have their own classicness.

Whatever you are doing with your bike, all have this in common.

Now I’ve seen some, what I would call, ‘real pigs’. Of course this is subjective. VERY. But the lines just don’t flow. No harmony. No balance. If bikes had chakras they would all be blocked.

How well I remember that terrible day

We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter
Johnny Turk he was ready, he primed himself well
He chased us with bullets, he rained us with shells
And in five minutes flat he’d blown us all to hell

We buried ours and the Turks buried theirs
Then we started all over again

Now I trained many years in kung-fu. You learn about ch’i. Energy. Flow. Today I’m an ‘alte sac’ and stick to Tai Ch’i. Still all about Ch’i. Yin and yang. Balance. Flow. Harmony. Am I starting to talk like your wife?

Sometimes it’s a good idea to stop and listen. You don’t have to agree. Just making the effort can produce results.

If you’re really adventurous, take your missus, or better still, someone elses, and go learn about Tantra

Now those that were left, well we tried to survive
In a mad world of blood, death and fire

Why? Because it’s all about being at one with your surroundings. Bikes are no different. I’m not advocating you get deep and dirty with her except in pure mechanical union, at least not when anyone is watching. But if you and your bike commune while commuting your missus isn’t going to get jealous if you build her a bike too, and you will enjoy your riding so much more. You wont need to battle all the way.

Look and decide what you like and why. How does it all fit together? Does it match you and your body shape? Your riding style? Do the eye and brain connect with your balls and say ‘YES’.


1 .. pen and paper ... your second best friend

Your best friend is a pen and paper. Or photoshop. Don’t throw anything away. Keep all your sketches. They will get better. The old ones serve as an idea bank. For both those you like and don’t like.

So they collected the cripples, the wounded, the maimed
And they shipped us back home to Australia
The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay
I looked at the place where my legs used to be
And thank Christ there was nobody waiting for me

Some popular approaches include:

  • KISS principle, (Keep it Simple Stupid, etc.), which strives to eliminate unnecessary complications.
  • There is more than one way to do it (TIMTOWTDI), a philosophy to allow multiple methods of doing the same thing.
  • Use-centered design, which focuses on the goals and tasks associated with the use of the artifact, rather than focusing on the end user.
  • User-centered design, which focuses on the needs, wants, and limitations of the end user of the designed artifact.
  • “Form follows function” Ralph Lauren

At the same time you’re collecting the bits and pieces you want. Don’t be afraid of changing your mind. Happens all the time. Shows you’re learning.

After all, these projects never really end.

And now every April I sit on my porch

Well it’s a classic too. A classic anti-war song. About the Allied campaign at Gallipoli in Turkey. A major design blunder.
